Prepare to participate: first consider which tool you want to use to enter your sightings. GBBC uses two tools for bird sightings – Merlin Bird ID app or eBird (mobile app and desktop). You can also use eBird mobile and the Merlin Bird ID app together if you download both of them on your mobile device.

Merlin Bird ID app is a great way to identify birds, especially if you are new to birding. You cannot tell us the number of birds for each species using the Merlin Bird ID app, but telling us you "saw X bird at X location" is important data. If you would rather report the number of birds you see, eBird is the better tool.

If you used the Merlin Bird ID app last year and want to up your birding game, try eBird (mobile app or desktop). But, we suggest you take the FREE online eBird Essentials course first! eBird Essentials is a free, self-paced, Bird Academy course that will help you gain confidence when reporting birds sightings to eBird.

Other ways to prepare for the GBBC:

Already have Merlin or eBird? Log in to the tool you want to use this year and make sure you know your username and password. Reach out to us now if you need help.

If you plan on using Merlin Bird ID app, download the app today to save time. Then, navigate to Explore Birds, to see birds that are common to your area at this time of year.

eBird Mobile is another option for those of you ready to use eBird or interested in sharing the numbers of birds you see. Download the mobile app early to practice.

If you plan to count using paper and pencil, then enter the data online, a list of species seen in your region may help. Consider downloading a list ahead of time to become familiar with the birds in advance of the event. Video instructions for how to do this on eBird.org/explore can be found here.

Description:  Launched in 1998 bythe Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great BackyardBird Count (GBBC) was the first online citizen-science project to collect dataon wild birds and to display results in near real time. Birds Canada joined theproject in 2009 to provide an expanded capacity to support participation inCanada. In 2013, GBBC became a global project when participants began enteringdata into eBird, the world’s largest biodiversity-related citizen science(community science) project.

    Dates:  February 14-17, 2025

Observe birds for 15 minutes or more, at least once over the four days of the     event.

Count all the birds you see or hear within your planned time/location

Editing with Lightroom by Nancy Miller

Learn how to edit your photos by using the tools and masks. Even if you don’t use Lightroom, a lot of these basic tools are available in most of the editing software. I will show you ways to possibly save a photo you might throw away. Keep in mind, this does not apply to a photo that is out of focus.

If you have a photo you would like me to use as an example, you can email it to me at n-miller@msn.com, and I will be glad to see what can be done.

If you plan to attend this workshop, please register by emailing Nancy Miller at n-miller@msn.com.

This event lasts a couple of hours, but all are welcome to come and go as they please. Participants are advised to bring a chair, binoculars and water.

The location of the Little Sit is technically in Sadler, TX, but it is within the boundaries of Hagerman NWR.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service recently proposed Endangered Species Act protection for Monarch butterflies. The Monarch migration is unique in the butterfly world. While some other butterfly species are known to travel long distances to find food or populate different areas, those are one-way migrations. Only the Monarch butterfly flies south to survive the winter and then the same individual returns north. Laurie will explain what we are doing at Hagerman to track and protect these beautiful insects. But Monarchs aren’t the only butterfly species in danger of disappearing. We’ll look at some other butterfly species once found in Texas but are now “species of greatest concern”.

Laurie Sheppard is a certified Texas Master Naturalist with a primary interest in butterflies. She has tracked, photographed, and documented 95 butterfly species at Hagerman NWR of the 98 species of butterflies recorded in Grayson County. She leads a group of volunteers who provide Monarch migration data to Journey North each year and she was responsible for locating and reporting on several sub-populations of “at risk” Frosted Elfin butterflies at Hagerman.

Laurie is a long-time volunteer at Hagerman NWR, currently serving as a Butterfly Garden Docent, a Tram Driver, a Nature Nook staffer, a writer/editor for the Featherless Flyer, and a member of the Friends of Hagerman Board of Directors. She is an avid photographer and regularly shares her images of butterflies, birds, and other wildlife on social media and in the Friends of Hagerman’s public outreach materials.

Learn about common backyard birds, like this Cedar Waxwing by Donnie Simmons

Wayne Meyer will be leading classes in how to become a bird watcher this spring. Starting in mid-March, just as the temperatures should start to warm up, the classes will go over basics like using binoculars, using field guides, learning the local birds, learning how to find them, etc.

Classes will be from 8 AM until noon on 22 and 29 March, 5 and 12 April. We will spend approximately 90 minutes each day in a classroom and the rest of the time out on the refuge looking at birds.

In 1993, Dr. Wayne Meyer finally achieved his life’s dream of being paid to look at birds when he joined the faculty of Austin College. He has birded both coasts of the U.S. extensively and now has spent a quarter century birding in Texas and Oklahoma. The proximity of Austin College to Hagerman NWR has made research on prairie birds easy and convenient and he has been studying song learning and singing in Painted Buntings for over a decade. Meyer is also a sought after speaker for Master Naturalist groups and a frequent speaker at the Friends of Hagerman NWR second Saturday programs.

    Four Saturdays: 3/22, 3/29, 4/05, 4/12

    Countdown to Monarch Spring Migration

    Learn How You Can Help!

The days are getting longer and in about two months, the first Monarchs will arrive in north Texas. When they do, volunteers from Friends of Hagerman NWR will be on hand to collect information such as what the butterflies are feeding on and where there is milkweed to support their larvae. Those butterflies may have traveled many thousands of miles to get to this point and survived many hazards to finally begin the next generation.

Each year, Friends of Hagerman NWR participates in the Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program (IMMP) - a national program that documents milkweed, nectar plant, and monarch use data from various land-use types and regions. Information gathered at National Wildlife Refuges like Hagerman is an important part of the research shaping scientists' understanding of how monarchs interact with their environment and how the population and its habitat changes over time. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently proposed listing Monarch butterflies on the Endangered Species List.

Please register here for more information about how you can join the Monarch Monitoring Team.
